The Bianco Nero collection
of ceramic and porcelain tabletop accessories features smooth lines and
contemporary designs. Whether glossy or matte, all items are either
finished in soft white or contrasting black. From distinctively Asian
pieces to uniquely shaped serving dishes, this line is easily
recognizable.
Alumina-Glazed Porcelain
All items in
the Bianco Nero line of porcelain serveware and tabletop accessories
are glazed with a special glaze that adds an extra layer of stability
to every product.
Regular glazing
on porcelain is done by reduction firing and is susceptible to chipping
as well as leaving individual porcelain pieces weak after prolonged use
in the dishwasher. Glazes that contain alumina (aluminum oxide) reduce
the size of flaws in the surface of the porcelain. By doing so, an
alumina glaze also increases the porcelain's resistance to crack
propagation that is most commonly caused by knife marks.
Interestingly,
the addition of alumina generates a less translucent porcelain. This
effect is achieved through an oxidized firing process that allows an
ample supply of oxygen to combine completely with the glaze and the
metals in the clay. The end result is an alumina-glazed porcelain piece
that is stronger, heavier and ensures maximum durability.
